tasty yeast

making bread (and i am talking about baking here) is one of the easier and cooler things to do on a rainy day. trader joe’s el cerrito just started carrying yeast, or at least i just noticed the last time i was there. i proofed it in some hot water with dissolved sugar, and it smelled so good that i spent a couple minutes with my nose in the bowl. really good yeast smells like life itself, i suppose because it IS alive and gnawing on all those sugar particles, converting them into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
